Today we’re going to take a burden off your shoulders. We’re telling to never use a script for your video marketing.

Is a script a good way to make sure your videos are on point? Yes, but it can also be a crutch. Video scripts can keep you from being spontaneous and natural in your videos, which will make them feel stiff and forced. If you’re having trouble getting started, try outlining your points instead of scripting them word for word. This will help you stay on track without making your videos feel too scripted.

People cringe at the sound of the word “video script” because it immediately makes us think of stiff, formal videos that don’t feel authentic or genuine.

Another downside to using video scripts is that they can be difficult to memorize. If you stumble over your words or forget what you’re supposed to say, it will be very obvious to your viewers. Instead, try practicing your delivery until you’re confident you can deliver your lines without stumbling.

Video scripts can also be limiting. They often dictate the pacing and direction of your video, which can lead to videos that feel stiff and robotic. If you want your videos to feel more natural, film without a script. This will give you more freedom to explore different ideas and topics.

Feedstories uses a Q&A approach. We believe that as a business owner you have conversations with your customers every day and you can do this all day, so why not mimic this real-life situation and do it on camera?

The best thing is video is forgiving, and you can edit it to be a perfect delivery of your message EVERY TIME.

So leave video scripts for the actors. Let’s just have a conversation and watch how much authenticity oozes from your video!

I had a really great question from a subscriber this week, and I thought it’d be a really good opportunity to share with you because what he shared and what questions he had was something that I actually answer quite frequently.

The problem is essentially this: “I’m spending $300 a month, $500 a month on Facebook, Instagram ads, and I am just not getting the sales that I want.”

This is not necessarily just an advertising problem. There are actually 5 things that you want to look into diagnose slumping sales.

So the first thing is this is, that (1) Does my product or my service absolutely fulfill a desire or solve a problem? Now we’ve all heard the term bleeding neck, right? If somebody’s got a bleeding neck, how do you fix it? You really need to take an honest look at your product and services and say, is this something people absolutely desire, or does it absolutely solve a problem? And the more extreme that is, the more sellable your product is. Now, if you’re in a market where there’s a dozen or so competitors and people can get this thing anywhere or it’s not unique enough, then you’re left competing on price and things like that.

So as you were thinking about positioning your product, positioning your service, Perry Marshall talks about a Definitive Selling Proposition. How can you frame your product in such a way that it absolutely solves a problem and it absolutely fulfills a desire that somebody has? And just be honest with yourself about that. If you can’t say, yeah, it’s really kind of not unique, then that’s maybe where your problem lies.

Now, if you really feel like you have a great product, great service, then you need to check something in regards to your offer. Your offer is how you package that product or service and present it to the marketplace. So (2) if your offer doesn’t result in a “hell yes!”, by your prospects, then you might have an issue. What you want is to be able to say, I have this product, I have this service and here is what I’m offering to you. This is how I want you to consume it. If your response from your marketplace, isn’t a hell yes, then you need to work more on your offer.

Another rabbit hole you want to go down is targeting. Now, this is really important, obviously, as you think about your advertising, (3) am I really targeting the right people? If you think about the way you position your product, the way you position your offer, then are you actually reaching the right people? So that’s another thing to check. Am I targeting the right people?

(4) Then it comes down to traffic, right? If you open a store in a part of town that doesn’t get people driving by, you’re not going to get the sales. So am I driving enough traffic? So you have to really consider how many people can I put my offer in front of for $300 a month? Do I need to spend a $1000 a month? Do I need to spend $5000 a month? You need to be thinking about traffic in terms of I need to get eyeballs in front of my offer. So if you’re not spending enough and you’re getting just a trickle of traffic, well, you really can’t evaluate whether those other things are working. You need to have traffic.

And then the fifth thing is really then diving into your ad creative. (5) Does my image, does my video, does my copy do a great job of talking about my product? Does it do a great job of talking about my service? Am I able to put a great offer in front of them? Are you putting all these pieces together? When you think about who you’re targeting, are you really targeting them in your creative?

Now, if these questions were easy, all right, people would be millionaires, right? It would be very easy.

These are hard questions. These are fundamental core questions, and you may not be able to answer them in a week, a month, or even a year. These are things that you want to work with, but you need to actively work through these things. And it’s not maybe just one at a time. Maybe you have to work on a couple at a time.

Then you really need to ask yourself if you are honestly answering these questions? Sometimes an outside opinion helps.

So if this is something that’s bothering you and you can’t figure out where to start, go ahead and book a call with us and we’ll be able to talk through it.

Here’s some tips on not only getting video done, but getting multiple videos done in one shot.

Getting video equipment set up and set just right could take 10-20 minutes. So given that it takes that much time, we always insist with our clients that they plan on filming 3-5 videos at one time when they are producing content for social media or their YouTube channel.

We actually have 2-3 dozen clients in a given month who have a set appointment with us. They show up at the same time/day each month and it’s part of a routine. This is a great help in making sure content gets produced for your business on a regular basis. Plus, knowing you are knocking out 3-5 videos, it gives you a feeling of accomplishment to get so much done in a little amount of time.

So, we’re not just shooting one video, we shoot several. So our clients love coming into a session with an outline of the videos they will shoot, and we film them one after the other. Not only does this save time, it allows you to get into a performance rhythm and the quality of your videos starts to improve as your performance and comfort level improves!

The videos that you should start with when looking at your marketing are “The Big Why” or an “About Us” video. This explains the reason why people get into business, and it brings out humanity in a good way because they warmed up to us while watching this one!

Another type of great rapport-building resource is an “Overview Video” This communicates what problem our solutions will address for them; if we can fix their issue then chances are high that many more customers may convert on contact number two.

With so many new things vying for attention online, it’s important to offer people video content they want. That’s what a good overview video does. It’s the kind of video that give viewers an idea of what your company has on offer without getting into too much detail or spending ages talking at length about some unrelated topic.

How do you get in the right frame of mind before appearing on camera?

It’s natural for people to feel nervous when they are about to be filmed, but there are a few things that can help you calm your nerves and make it easier for you.

Even people we’ve been filming for four or five years on a regular basis, can’t start off well. They need to warm up. So one of the things Brandon does is they have a conversation about what they had for breakfast and it’s silly. And every time we ask it, they laugh. Right? It’s funny.

But that’s also part of one of our tricks is humor. When you laugh, it helps with some of the adrenaline because when you get in front of the camera and you haven’t been in front of a while, you’ve got this anxiety built up and that you got some adrenaline flowing. And so one of the things that we like to do is part of that warm-up.

When we’re asking you what you have for breakfast and we’re joking around, what you’re doing is releasing some of that adrenaline you’ve got flowing through your body, and you’re also throwing off some of that nervous energy. Nervous energy makes you talk real fast and sound winded.

So, be sure to get in the right frame of mind before you go on camera.

Here’s some other ideas. First, you could try some light exercise or meditation. This will release any pent up stress hormones from your body which will make it much more comfortable getting on camera.

Second, if possible have someone who is with you while filming tell jokes or funny stories because laughter releases tension and makes the person laughing feel happy again! If these two tips don’t work then try taking deep breaths before going live–this helps slow down our heart rate.

How do you get comfortable before going on camera?
